Welcome

Welcome to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) international conference website.

The International Policing Toward 2020 conference, held in Canberra, Australia, from 19 to 21 November 2007, heard from a range of experts from around the world on emerging trends in crime, sociology, geopolitics, science and technology. Delegates to the conference also considered what the implications of those trends might be for law enforcement.

Speakers at the conference canvassed issues such as rising sea levels, conflict provoked by resource scarcity, desertification and increasing extreme weather events, social dislocation, increasing criminal activity online, new forms of crime enabled by evolving technology and managing the increasing pace of change.

Other topics included the future shape of the nation state, the globalisation of crime, international cooperation among law enforcement agencies and how international governance systems might need to adapt to detect and prevent crime which increasingly transcends borders.
